by: Findy Pratama Asfara

Mount Semeru is one of the active volcanoes in Indonesia. This mountain is located in East Java province. On 4 December 2021, Mount Semeru experienced an increase in volcanic activity as indicated by the occurrence of hot clouds falling at 15.20 WIB. The eruption caused the surrounding area to be affected by ash rain. Heavy rain that day also caused cold lava from the crater of the mountain, the highest mountain on the island of Java, to rush toward the village below. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said that the spread of hot cloud avalanches had an impact on two sub-districts, the first is Pronojiwo District in Pronojiwo Village, Oro-oro Ombo, Sumberurip, and Kobokan Curah Hamlet in Supiturang Village and the second is Candipuro Sub-district in Kamarkajang Hamlet in Sumberwuluh Village and Sumbermujur Village.

BNPB reported that around 10 sub-districts were affected by the eruption of Mount Semeru. Thousands of residents were forced to flee and while dozens died and were declared missing. Thousands of houses were affected by this hot cloud. As a result of 11 December 2021, more than 9,118 residents became refugees.
